Glasses and lenses – free for children in Spain
A new rule came into force in Spain in September 2025: the state will start financing glasses and contact lenses for all children under 16.
🔹 Parents will be able to receive direct assistance of up to 100 euros per child through the College of Opticians.
🔹 The measure will be issued in the form of a real decree and has already begun the approval process.
🔹 Previously, such assistance was planned only for low-income families, but now it will become universal without means testing.
“Whether a child can see the school board should not depend on the family’s wallet,” said Pedro Sánchez.
📉 Why is this important?
According to the Visión y Vida association:
— 720,000 children in Spain live with so-called “visual poverty” – parents cannot afford to buy them glasses.
— Up to 30% of school failure cases are related to vision problems
